Филологический факультет

The Faculty has been functioning since the founding of the University (1932) and is one of the largest in ASU in its range and number of students. Thousands of teachers of Abkhaz Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, German and English Languages ​​graduated from the Faculty. Faculty Graduates also work in Educational Institutions, Scientific Institutions, Editorial Offices of Newspapers and Magazines, Publishing Houses, Libraries, Archives, Domestic and Foreign Companies.

In different years, the Faculty was headed by: Associate Professor P.Kh. Adzinba, Assoc. E.D. Arsenyeva-Gagudiya, Professor. Sh.K. Aristava, Prof. O.P. Dzidzariya, Assoc. A.E. Ashuba. Currently, the Faculty is headed by PhD in Philosophy, Associate Professor Hagush Batal Antipovich.

The Faculty staff is consisted of 13 Professors and 34 Associate Professors, Candidates of Sciences. Among the leading experts there are Academicians: Sh.K. Aristava, Sh. Salakaya, Z.D. Japua, V.A. Chirikba Corr. ASA V.E. Quarchia; Professors: E.G. Bebiya, A.L. Papaskir, O.P. Dzidzariya L.R. Hagba, V.A. Cogoniya, and Professor Emeritus of the Abkhaz Language Department, R.K. Gublia.

Among the graduates of the Faculty are writers and poets, famous politicians, popular TV and Radio Program Hosts, and Theater Artists: National Poet of Abkhazia and Kabardino-Balkaria, Bagrat Shinkuba; Doctor of Philosophy, Konstantin Shakryl; former Chairman of the Union of Writers of Abkhazia, Ivan Tarba; National Writer of Abkhazia, Alexey Gogua; National Poets of Abkhazia: Nelli Tarba, Mushni Lasuriya, Rushbey Smyr; writers: Alexey Jonua, Konstantin Gerkheliya, Nikolay Khashig, Platon Bebiya, Ruslan Kapba, General Givi Agrba; First Secretary of the Abkhaz Regional Party Committee, Valerian Kobakhia; Prime Minister, Arkhip Labakhua; Prime Minister, Vyacheslav Tsugba and others.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND GERMAN LANGUAGES

Members of the Department, in addition to Educational and Methodological work, conduct Research activities. The Faculty also provides Translator Training Courses for the Republic.

The Department is headed by Associate Professor G.K. Gerkheliya and consists of 24 Lecturers.

 

The main specialists of the Department are graduates of the Abkhaz State University. They are: Anshba Emma Artiomovna, Senior Lecturer; Shakirbay Zaira Grigorievna, Senior Lecturer; Chalmaz Svetlana Davidovna, Senior Lecturer; Ankvab Emma Nikolaevna, Senior Lecturer; Kiut Astanda Nikolaevna, Senior Lecturer; Bebiya Kama Platonovna, Senior Lecturer; Gogua Amra Alekseevna, Senior Lecturer; Ketsba Nonna Nurievna, Lecturer; Chepia Rauf, PhD; Bganba Malvina, Senior Lecturer; Ayba Esma Georgievna, Senior Lecturer,and others.

 

Graduates of various universities of the USSR and Russia also work at the Department: Associate Professor Adleiba L.F., Associate Professor Agrba L.A. etc. All members of the Department are active participants in discussions of issues related to teaching foreign languages ​​at school, they also collaborate with international organizations and carry out cultural and educational activities involving different universities abroad.

 

In the process of studying various aspects of English and German Languages, lecturers of the Department use their own teaching materials along with the educational material of best British, American and German authors. All Lecturers are actively conducting Scientific activities, take part in international, national, regional and inter-university scientific and practical conferences. The Department teaching personnel is constantly upgrading their skills thanks to Continuing Education.

 

The Faculty is actively developing traditions of teaching Foreign Languages ​​at the Abkhaz State University, which are based on integrative learning and maximum immersion of students into the Language environment:

- all classes are conducted in the studied foreign language;

- round tables are held in the studied foreign language;

- special courses are also conducted in English.

Students are offered an Intensive Languages Course ​​with in-depth learning of a number of basic aspects:

- practical course, or communication;

-practical grammar course of foreign language;

- reading books in the original language;

- working with authentic audio, video and visual teaching material and sources.

Thus, students get the opportunity not only to improve communication skills, but also to enrich the vocabulary and terminology in various fields.

Lecturers of the Department are regularly upgrading their skills. Specialists, Professors from foreign countries - native speakers are also invited by the Department.

In addition, the Department runs TOEFL Training Program (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The scores obtained at the Final Exam provide the opportunity to non-native English speakers-students from all over the world to study at universities abroad.

The Faculty of Philology is a forge of national cadres. Graduates of the Faculty work in universities and other educational institutions, scientific institutions, editorial offices of newspapers and magazines, publishing houses, libraries, archives, domestic and foreign companies. Among the Faculty graduates there are famous politicians, poets and writers, popular TV and Radio program hosts, theater artists and others.

 

The Faculty of Philology is constantly maintaining creative relations with the Republican Organization of Writers, holds meetings with cultural and art workers. The Faculty is actively coperating with the D.I. Gulia Abkhaz Institute for Humanitarian Studies. At the Abkhaz Institute for Humanitarian Studies there is a Base Department of Abkhaz Studies of ASU, headed by the Associate Professor. V.Sh. Avidzba.

 

DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM

The Department of Journalism was opened in 1995 at the Faculty of Philology by the decision of ASU Rectorate.

 

A great contribution to the formation and development of the Department was made by such Scientists as Doctor of philology, Professor E.G. Bebiya; Associate Professor, Head of Department of Journalism, G.A. Amquab; Doctor of Philology, Professor L.R. Khagba; Associate Professor A.R. Gumba; PhD in Philology B. Shulumba.

 

The Department prepares specialists to work in newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, TV and radio broadcasting, advertising agencies, public relations services.

 

Graduates of the Department work in the National newspapers and television "Apsny", "Republic of Abkhazia", ​​"Abkhaz University", AT and Abaza.

 

The Department is following traditions of University Fundamental Education and at the same time is matching modern demands of the Media industry and Journalism.

 

The Scientific work at the Department focuses on the study of various aspects of journalistic and media activities in modern society in a multimedia environment.

 

A lot of attention is paid to the Philological Training of future journalists, as well as specialization disciplines. Lecture Courses and workshops are designed in such a way that students not only master the theory of journalism, but also acquire practical skills in the media.

 

DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES

In 1938 the Pedagogical Institute opened the Department of Foreign Languages. It combined English and German branches. At different times, the Department was headed by Senoir Lecturer B.II. Dvorianskaya; Associate Professor I.I. Zaporizhskyj; Senoir Lecturers:A.E. Skrabbe, L.P. Soloviov, A.E. Chkhikvadze, M.I. Maitop, V.A. Kaslandzia, E.A. Anshba. The teaching was also conducted by A.P. Evdokimova, T.A. Yezhova, E.A. Dvaladze, T.A. Danelihya, O.P. Tikerpu, R.Sh. Khockerba, E.A. Novikov and others.

 

It should be noted that the Department of Foreign Languages ​​played a significant role in improvement of teaching foreign languages ​​in schools of the Republic. Members of the Department of Foreign Languages, along with educational and methodological work, also were conducting the Research work.

 

However, in order to improve scientific and pedagogical qualifications at the Department, the administration had opened two separate departments: Department of English and Department of German Languages. They did a great job both in the field of methodology, and on some issues of English and German grammar, stylistics and vocabulary. At a certain time, the Department was headed by Associate Professor Basaria Indira, Associate Professor Kvarchelia Liana and others. The Department of German Language was headed by Associate Professor E. Novikov, Associate Professor V.A. Kaslandzia, Senior Lecturer E.A. Anshba.

 

Today, these two Departments are united again into the Department of English and German Languages.​​ Separately is functioning the Department of Foreign Languages, which, carefully preserving many years of traditions, enthusiastically embarked on the path of professionalization and modernization of teaching foreign languages. The new Department of foreign languages ​​offers trainings to all Faculties where a Foreign Language is taught as a non-specialized subject. The composition of the Department is replenished by young employees, mainly graduates of ASU (more than 19 people). Over the years, the Department was headed by a senior Lecturer, Maklakova E.A. Now the Department is headed by the Senior Lecturer Achba R.O.

 

The new Department of Foreign Languages offers trainings to all Faculties where a Foreign Language is taught as a non-specialized subject. The Department aims to provide future professionals with skills and abilities of linguistic and intercultural interaction in situations of professional communication in Foreign Language through the formation of linguistic and communicative competencies.

 

DEPARTMENT OF THE ABKHAZ LANGUAGE №1

The work of the Abkhaz Language Department No 1 consists in the determination of main directions for the State Language Development and providing advanced training of specialists in this field; the development of textbooks and teaching aids; elaboration of Encyclopedias on studies of the Abkhaz Language dialects, the Scientific Study of Abkhaz-Adyghe Languages, the expansion of teaching material and technical base, etc.

 

Today, such scientists and authors of fundamental works on Abkhaz linguistics, are actively working on the development of the Abkhaz Literary Language, making a great contribution to the culture: Aristava Sh.K., Chkadua L.P., Gubliya R.K., Amichba V.A., Amichba S.A., Dzidzariya O.P., Samanba L.Kh., Azhiba A.Sh., Chirikba V.A., Khagba L.R., Khagush B.A., Taniya E. Sh., Likhova N.U., Khalbad V.A., Kvarcheliya F.Z., Ankvab A.E.

 DEPARTMENT OF THE ABKHAZ LANGUAGE №2

The work of the Abkhaz Language Department No. 2 is associated with the development of text books and teaching aids for Special Faculties. The Faculty provides trainings to graduates of various Faculties to enable them conducting professional activities in the State Language, develops the most convenient language learning methodology for students who do not speak the State Language. Faculty graduates work in Universities and other Educational Institutions, Scientific Institutions, Editorial Offices of newspapers and magazines, publishing houses, libraries, archives, domestic and foreign companies. Among the graduates of the Faculty there are famous politicians, poets and writers, popular TV and Radio Program Hosts, theater artists and others. The Faculty of Philology constantly maintains creative relations with the republican writer's organization, holds meetings with specialists on culture and art. It is also actively collaborating with the Abkhaz D.I. Gulia Institute for Humanitarian Studies. The ASU joint Base Department of Abkhaz Studies headed by an Associate Professor. V.Sh. Avidzba is functioning at the framework of the Abkhaz D.I. Gulia Institute for Humanitarian Studies.

DEPARTMENT OF THE ABKHAZ LITERATURE

It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of this department to the preservation of the Abkhaz National Culture, wonderful traditions, passing from the older generations to the young generations. The Department makes a great contribution to the publications of Abkhaz writer’s works and folklore.

 

Famous Scholars, writers and lecturers have worked and still are working at the Literature Department: Professor R.K. Gubliya, Professor D.I. Adleiba, Associate Professor P.Kh. Adzynba, Academician Sh.Kh. Salakaya, Academician S.L. Zukhba, Academician M.T. For many years, the irreplaceable head of the Department of Abkhaz Literature has been the PhD in Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Dzhinjoliya D.S.

 

The Department has developed the tradition of generational succession. Thus, today young employees of the Department together with their senior colleagues are developing textbooks for Schools and the University.

 

The Acting Department is also a part of the Department of Abkhaz Literature. The Department brought together many famous artists and theatrical figures. The Department is headed by the People's Artist of Abkhazia S.Kh. Agumava. Acting Department Graduates work in Theaters.

 

The goals and objectives of the Abkhaz Literature Department:

-      Training of highly qualified Specialists in the field of Abkhaz Literature;

-      Ensuring the high Scientific and Methodological level of teaching the main disciplines at the Department;

-      Organization of effective trainings and practical activities for obtaining primary professional skills of students-philologists;

-      Management of Educational and Scientific activities of Lecturers in order to increase the scientific potential of the Department.

DEPARTMENT OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

The Russian Language Department was founded in 1933, i.e. a year after the opening of the Pedagogical Institute. Many specialists worked in the Department in different years: M.I. Zagurskaya, Associate Professor G.V. Dubrovin, Prof. B.G. Tarba, Associate Professor N.G. Lozovoj, Associate Professor L.A. Lozovaya, Associate Professor L.I. Argun, Associate Professor E.D. Arsenyev-Gagulia, Senior Lecturer Ya.K. Gubaz.

 

The first head of the Russian Language Department, Associate Professor A.I. Davidovsky, was heading the Department until 1950. For several years his work on the Syntax of the Russian Language was published in the Journal “Russian Language at School”, etc., he was the author of several textbooks on the Russian Language for Abkhaz Schools. Since 1950, the Department was headed by Prof. G.A. Pirtskhalava.

 

A number of members of the Russian language Department were the authors of numerous scientific works and textbooks on the Russian language for Abkhaz Schools: B.G. Tarba, E.D. Gaguliya-Arsenyeva, L.A. Lozovaja and others.

 

In 1994, the Department was headed by Associate Professor N.D. Kogoniya. She was working on her Doctoral Dissertation at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the topic “Semantics of the time category and type in Abkhaz and Russian languages”. But just 10 days before the Thesis Defense, a remarkable person, the leading Scientist and Lecturer N.D. Kogoniya, passed away.

 

Since 2006, the Department of the Russian Language was headed by Associate Professor E.P. Stebletsova.Currently, the Department is headed by Associate Professor Otyrba R.N.

 

It is interesting to note that today many members of the Russian Language Department are graduates of the Abkhaz State University, including Associate Professor Otyrba R.N., Assoc. Dautiya F.V., Assoc. Marganiya L.B., Assoc. Ladariya A.D., Scientific Secretary of Phylological Faculty; Assoc. Kvitsiniya Sh.I., Assoc. Shalduga N.V., Head of ASU Graduate School, Senior Lecturer, Smyr N.Kh., Lecturers: Sabekiya E.D., Gurtskaya V.B., Gurtskaya G.B., Butba V.R.., Saakian R. In 2009 in the age of 52 years, a wonderful Lecturer and Educator, Ketsba Tengiz Ivanovich passed away.

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY OF RUSSIAN AND FOREIGN LITERATURE

The Department of Russian and Foreign Literature was created in 1937. At different times, many outstanding specialists were heading the Department: Associate Professor Leontievich, Professor Ilyinsky, Associate Professor Sh.I. Zaporizhsky, Senior Lecturer S.V. Akirtava. From 1956 to the present the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature is headed by the Doctor of Philology, Professor, Academician of ASA, M.G. Ladariya.

 

Such famous experts as T.D. Guliya (author of "Contemporary Soviet Feuilleton"), S.V. Akirtava ("Antifascist Novelsby A. Zegers"), L.A. Kobakhiya (“Problems of translation from Russian into Abkhaz Language”) were working at the Department at certain times.

 

Today the dynamic work of the Department is continued to be carried out by: Prof. M.G. Ladariya Prof. A.L. Papaskir, Prof. B.A. Gurguliya, Senior Lecturer N.V. Kayun Senior Lecturer M.A. Topchyan, Associate Professor N.G. Bahiya, Associate Professor S.L. Bebiya, Senior Lecturer M.B. Kvachakhiya, Senior Lecturer E.V., Kobakhiya, Lecturers: A.K. Bigvava., M.G. Gubliya, A.A. Gogua and others.

 

From the day of its foundation, members of the Department publish major scientific works, lead scientific circles, prepare scientific conferences, maintain close contacts with Schools in Abkhazia, and provide teachers with great methodological assistance.
